Make It Happen!

It's summer holiday time! If you're not going away over the next couple of weeks, make sure you join us in the park. We've got a full timetable for you, with only a couple of changes to our Wimbledon Park early sessions (see below).

All mums are welcome to our Buggyfit classes over the summer, including those with older children. Your little or big ones are welcome to play/sleep/eat/read nearby whilst you train (as always, your children remain your responsibility). Head over to our timetable for all the details.

If our daytime sessions don't work for you, why not join us at 6.15am? You can choose to finish at either 7.00am or 7.15am. When it's warm, there's no better time to exercise than in the cool early in the morning. Before work. Before the rest of the family are up. Before you've managed to think up all those excuses not to do it!

Here's the plan for Wimbledon Park early classes over the next couple of weeks. We hope to see lots of you there tomorrow morning! Come into the park via the Revelstoke Road entrance & you'll see us.

Wimbledon Park Early Classes Next Week...
Mon 1 Aug: 6.15am - 7.00/7.15am
Wed 3 Aug: 6.15am - 7.00/7.15am
Fri 5 Aug: No class

And The Following Week...
Mon 8 Aug: 6.15am - 7.00/7.15am
Wed 10 Aug: No class
Fri 12 Aug: 6.15am - 7.00/7.15am

All of our other Fit In The Park & Buggyfit sessions will be going ahead as normal over the next few weeks. You can buy your pass online & then pick it up at your next class.

Don't forget to apply suncream & squirt some bug spray on (especially for our early morning & evening sessions).

Happy Training,

Heather

Squirt On Some Bug Spray

If you come to any of our early morning or evening classes, the bugs are out in force at the moment. Key times are dusk and dawn. Please remember to put bug spray on, or if you forget, ask one of our team as they've probably got some in their bag.

My personal favorite at the moment is Incognito. It's 100% natural, doesn't contain deet & smells quite nice. I think it actually works better than the deet versions. The bugs literally just don't come anywhere near you. It also says it's safe for pregnant women & babies over 3 months. You can buy it direct from their website, at Waitrose and Holland & Barrett. And, of course, Amazon sell it too!

Thu 28 July: 6.15am South Park Gardens

Megan's running a 90 min seminar next week on Wednesday afternoon & would love to see some of our Buggyfit mums there. It's only £5.

Click here to book online. Places are limited & we think this will be a very popular course!

Inspired by Wimbledon Tennis? Here's how you can Get Match Fit

The All England Tennis Club might call the shots when it comes to big international tennis names, famous courts and legendary matches, but Wimbledon also has an abundance of smaller clubs for the non-pros and more casual SW19 players.

No matter what your tennis ability is though, if you want to improve your game, you should do what the Centre Court Champions do, and train off-court.

STRENGTH, ENDURANCE & POWER

For a winning combination of fast serves and powerful volleys, you need a strong upper body and good core stability.

Medicine balls, kettle bells and battle ropes will all help with this. Use big moves that require large ranges of motion and make demands on your whole body.

Build up endurance in your legs with body weight exercises like split jumps, squat jumps and box jumps. Include lots of multi-directional moves that involve leaping and hopping sideways, forwards & backwards.

CARDIO

Tennis requires brief bursts of intense effort. To be fast on the court, practice short sprints with quick changes in direction.

The fitter you are, the quicker you’ll recover after pushing hard. Include some HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) into your week and you’ll be less like to gasp for air in between points.

AGILITY

Off-court training allows you to focus on your footwork technique, without having to worry about hitting a ball. Set-up some drills using agility ladders and cones. Test yourself on both your speed and accuracy. Try and improve one, without detrimentally affecting the other.  It’s not as easy as it sounds!

FLEXIBILITY

To reach those really challenging shots, you need a certain degree of flexibility. A good yoga or stretch class will help you to loosen up those tight bits and give you a greater range of motion, particularly in your hips and shoulders.

Taking time out each week to improve your flexibility, will not only boost your game, but will reduce your risk of injury and may help you to unwind a little too.

ENJOY IT!

Vary your workouts to keep your mind motivated and your body challenged. Off-court training can be lots of fun, and you might be pleasantly surprised how it can really transform your game.

HA fitness runs a wide range of outdoor classes that incorporate all of the above! Check out our timetable for more details. Or why not get in touch to book some one-to-one personal training sessions with us.

Durnsford Park, Not Wimbledon Park This Week

With the Tennis Championships heading our way, SW19 will soon become the sporting focus of the world again.

During this busy fortnight (27 June to 10 July), all of our classes will continue to run, however this year we'll be temporarily moving out of Wimbledon Park (it's the Council's new policy unfortunately).

So this here's the plan:

Buggyfit postnatal classes will take place in Durnsford Park (see below). We'll be there at our regular times of 9.30am on Wednesdays & 11.00am on Thursdays (29, 30 June & 6,7 July). If you've got older children, bring them along as there is a fantastic little playground!

Fit In The Park 6.15am sessions will meet just outside of the Revelstoke Road Wimbledon Park gates. We'll then be putting you through your paces with some running drills around the grid & surrounding areas. It should be fun & you don't have to be a runner to take part! See you there at 6.15am on Wednesday & Friday.

Fit In The Park Saturday 9.00am classes will also take place in Durnsford Park (see below). We'll be there on 2 & 9 July with some challenging new moves for you!

Durnsford Park is a lovely green area just off Durnsford Road (put SW19 8EY into your sat nav). You'll find street parking (pay-at-machine) on Wellington, Lucien, Gordondale, Havana & Mount Roads. It's a bit further away from where all the action is, so there are no Wimbledon Tennis parking restrictions.

Obviously we do recommend leaving your car at home & giving your workout an extra boost by walking, running or cycling to our classes. However, if you're driving around Wimbledon during the tennis fortnight, it can get very busy, so it's wise to plan in extra travel time. Parking can also be challenging as there are restrictions in place. Go to the Wandsworth & Merton council websites for details.

All of our South Park Gardens classes will be running as normal. Check out our timetable for full details of all our classes. Be warned though, we've got some great workouts planned & we may even include a tennis theme here & there. We know this is a busy time, but we'd love to see as many of you as possible training with us over the coming weeks. If you need to renew your pass, or buy a pay-as-you-go session, head over to our purchase page.

Happy Training,

Heather

Comrades Marathon - Sponsor Heather!

On 29th May, I'll be in South Africa running the world's largest & oldest ultra-marathon. The challenge is to run 90K/56 miles in under 12 hours. It's hilly, it's hot & it's the hardest thing I've ever done.

As I'm only going to do this once (probably), I've decided to raise money for charity.  I've chosen Starfish, an official Comrades Marathon Charity, who care for vulnerable children affected by HIV & poverty in South Africa.

If you'd like to sponsor me, please head over to my Race4Charity page. You'll notice that the payments are made in Rand, this means that the charity doesn't have to pay conversion fees. If you prefer, you can do a direct bank transfer to Starfish (it can still go under my name) or pop some cash in my hand & I'll add it to my fundraising pot.

For a quick conversion, ZAR200 is about £9.60. Any amount you can give will be really appreciated.

You can follow the highs & lows of running journey so far on Instagram (hafitness).

Thank you so much!

Netwalking On Wimbledon Common

NetWalking on Wimbledon Common

Have time to talk business whilst getting fit. We’ll walk across Wimbledon Common with the occasional stop for a spot of strength training. You can chat to other business people or fire questions at me about exercise & fitness. There will be no set agenda. Just informal networking, fitness & fun.

When: Thursday 28 April 9.30 to 10.45am

Where: Meet and finish at the Windmill café. Great if you want to catch up for a coffee before or after the session. There’s a free carpark & toilets. Full directions & details about the meeting point here.

Who: All levels welcome.  This is a very inclusive & friendly group.  We warmly welcome & support anyone who may feel slightly intimidated or scared about joining an exercise class.  This isn’t bootcamp!

Why: You’ll come away feeling healthy, inspired & energised!

How much: Just £5 which will be donated to the Starfish Charity

What to wear on your feet: Trainers or walking boots. Wellies will be OK if you’re used to walking in them.

What to wear on your legs: Tracksuit bottoms, walking trousers, running tights, leggings etc.

What to wear on your top: Ideally a sports bra (for ladies) underneath a couple of tops. It’s good to have a few layers so that you can take things off as you warm up. A waterproof jacket or coat will be good too.

Anything else: In this weather, you probably won’t need to carry water with you, but having either a drink in your car or money for the café afterwards would be a good idea.

Sign up: Just drop us a line to book your place. Then bring a fiver along on the day!
